Established in the year 1916, by the Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar along with Diwan Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the factory was set up to explore and utilize resources and manufacture the purest form of sandalwood oil. You can not only buy sandalwood products but also get a guided tour of the factory to witness the various stages involves in the extraction of sandalwood oil from the trees and the preparation of different products. The setup is largely industrial with boilers, condensers, vats, and storerooms. A guide generally explains and takes visitors through the whole process from scratch to finish. A store located on the outside of the factory offers a variety of products made with oil including soaps, incense sticks, cosmetics, and perfumes.

These products have many healing properties like anti-aging, anti-scarring and the oil that is used in the manufacture of these products has a large number of uses in religious practices, skin and hair treatment as well as in pharmaceuticals. The factory also made soaps under the name of ‘Mysore Sandal Soap’ is the most famous and iconic product made from sandalwood.
