Shukavana, Mysore
The word ‘Shuka Vana’ accurately means Parrot Park. Shukavana is a rehabilitation center for birds mainly for the abused, injured, and abandoned ones. The place is set in the tranquil and serene premises of the Avadhoota Datta Peetham in the Sri Ganapathi Sachchidananda Ashram. It is spread across an area of one and a half acres which includes a beautiful and striking 50m walk–through high aviary. Shukavana has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records as the aviary currently holds the record for housing the largest number of bird species. The award was received by Swamiji.
Dr. Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji is the founder of the Avadhoota Datta Peetham and he is the person who established the Shukavana. Swamiji believes that birds are crucial for the existence of other species and because of their diminishing numbers in recent years; he started with the objective of giving shelter to the abandoned and sick birds. He started Shukavana as a rehabilitation center and provided veterinary care and shelter to the injured and uncared birds with full compassion and dedication. Today, he has a world record for his aviary’s remarkable diversity of birds. The place houses more than 2000 birds, with over 450 varied species and many rare and colorful species of parrots flying around here from all over the world. Some of them are Lorikeets, Sun Conures, Quaker Parrots, Macaws, Cockatoos, Eclectus, Amazon Parrots, and African Grey Parrots.
Swamiji and the park Shukavana believe that parrots represent our planet according to our birth date and so the parrots have been assigned and given the zodiac signs they are connected with. They also signify days and months of the year. The place is perfect for ornithophiles and nature lovers and is a must-visit.
