It was set up under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India and is aided by the Central Government of India. NINASAM is short for Sri Neelakanteshwara Natyaseva Sangha and is founded by K.V Subbanna, who is a renowned dramatist, Kannada writer and scholar with the goal to promote Kannada theatre and preserve the cultural heritage of Karnataka.
